Mysuru, Karnataka — A city synonymous with elegance and tradition, Mysuru is now weaving a story of modernization in its iconic silk industry. With an eye on enhancing production efficiency and maintaining its legacy, the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) has introduced cutting-edge technology to its looms, blending tradition with innovation.
Revamping Production with State-of-the-Art Technology
KSIC, which has been at the helm of Mysore Silk’s production since its establishment in 1912, has embarked on a major modernization drive. Recently, the corporation invested in advanced Jacquard and Dobby looms, imported from Japan, replacing aging machinery that had been in use for decades. These high-tech looms are capable of producing intricate designs with superior precision, reducing the production time for a saree by nearly 20% while maintaining the hallmark quality of Mysore Silk.
The project, supported by the Department of Handlooms and Textiles, Karnataka, aims to position Mysore Silk as a global luxury fabric while boosting domestic production. The initiative has received an investment of ₹50 crore, allocated for upgrading machinery and enhancing quality control systems.
Ensuring Authenticity and Consumer Trust
To safeguard the reputation of Mysore Silk, KSIC has introduced a unique identification code and hologram for every saree. This innovation ensures that customers can verify the authenticity of their purchase, protecting the industry from counterfeit products that have plagued the market in recent years.
Empowering Local Sericulturists
The modernization drive is not just about technology but also about uplifting the backbone of the silk industry — the sericulturists. Karnataka, which produces over 8,000 metric tonnes of raw silk annually, is India’s largest silk-producing state, with Mysuru contributing significantly to this output. By increasing production capacity, the demand for raw silk has surged, promising better incomes for over 25,000 sericulture farmers in the region.
A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
“Mysore Silk is a symbol of India’s rich cultural heritage. This modernization ensures that while we honor our traditions, we are also prepared to compete in global markets,” said a senior official from KSIC. The corporation also plans to expand its market reach, with exports to Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia set to increase by 15%over the next two years.
Sustainability at the Core
In alignment with the National Sericulture Development Programme, the modernization also emphasizes sustainable practices. KSIC has adopted eco-friendly dyeing techniques and energy-efficient processes to minimize environmental impact, reflecting a commitment to green production methods.
A Silk Renaissance in the Making
Mysuru’s silk industry is not just embracing change; it is setting a benchmark for how traditional industries can adapt to modern demands while staying true to their roots. As Mysore Silk continues to dazzle the world, the blend of innovation and heritage promises a bright future for this timeless craft.
