GREATER NOIDA, May 2026 — In a landmark development for India’s aviation sector, the Noida International Airport (NIA) is officially scheduled to begin commercial flight operations on June 15, 2026. The announcement marks the end of a month-long delay and signals the birth of a secondary aviation hub intended to transform travel across the National Capital Region (NCR) and Northern India.
Operational Launch and Key Carriers
The inaugural commercial flight from the Greenfield project will be operated by IndiGo, the country’s largest carrier. Following closely behind, Akasa Air and Air India Express are expected to initiate their services from the facility shortly thereafter.
The airport is being positioned as a state-of-the-art logistics and passenger hub, designed to provide a seamless, cost-efficient experience for both airlines and travelers. The path to launch was paved by recent critical approvals, including the clearance of the aerodrome security program by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which confirmed the facility meets all national safety standards.
Leadership Shift and Regulatory Hurdles
The transition to operational status has not been without administrative challenges. Recently, the airport appointed Nita Samra, formerly the Chief Financial Officer, as the interim CEO.
This shift occurred after regulatory authorities denied permission for foreign national Christoph Schnellmann to continue in the top role. Under BCAS mandates, the CEO of an Indian airport must be an Indian national—a security-related requirement that contributed to the initial delay in commercial operations.
Legal Victory for Expansion
While the first phase—consisting of a single runway and terminal—is prepared to handle 12 million passengers annually, the airport’s future growth received a major boost from the judiciary.
The Allahabad High Court recently upheld the land acquisition process for the airport’s expansion in Gautam Buddh Nagar. A division bench dismissed several petitions from landowners, ruling that the acquisition complied with the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act. However, the court emphasized that authorities must fully implement all rehabilitation and resettlement measures before taking possession of residential land.
The Bottom Line: A New Era for NCR
With legal hurdles cleared and a firm launch date set, Noida International Airport is poised to become a critical gateway. The project’s success will be measured by its ability to significantly ease the heavy congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and reshape the economic landscape of North India.
