Key Highlights:
- Fab Readiness: Completion of India’s first large-scale commercial semiconductor fabrication units.
- PLI Impact: Over ₹76,000 crore in government support driving the “India Semiconductor Mission” (ISM).
- Skill Development: 85,000 “Design-Linked Incentive” (DLI) certified engineers entering the workforce.
2026 marks the year India transitioned from a chip consumer to a chip maker. Following the 2024 groundbreaking ceremonies in Gujarat and Assam, the first “Made in India” 28nm and 40nm chips have begun rolling off assembly lines.
The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has expanded the ISM to include specialized support for compound semiconductors and display fabs. These chips are primarily feeding the domestic automotive and consumer electronics sectors, reducing India’s import dependency on East Asian markets. The integration of semiconductor manufacturing into the local ecosystem is expected to add 2% to India’s manufacturing GDP by 2027.
